This year, tournament officials are betting that delaying the tournament's final table moments will generate more interest and a leap in the ratings for the Championship. The hope is that this will lead to certain fame for the players who remain, and with all the hype that will be going on for the next few months I tend to think it will.

"This is probably going to be a watershed moment for poker," said series commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. Pollack, Nascars former vice president, says the goal is to help the tournament build a reputation for poker similar to other mainstream sports leagues. To do that, Pollack says poker has to excite the fans.

"We've been very forthright in that ambition," Pollack said. "Change doesn't happen overnight but a change in intention can happen overnight and our intention here is to help more people experience our thrills and excitement."

In the past fans of poker got word of the main event winner long before the tape-delayed event aired on television by way of the written word and the web. This year the network telecast will not air until hours after someone cashes in.

"This will be poker's biggest night," Pollack said.

The more I think on this, the more I believe Pollack may have just hit on something. If nothing else it keeps the WSOP in the media attention more, and it should bring the TV ratings way up when it's aired in November.

And now for the latest 2008 WSOP standings:

# Winner of Event 49 - $1,500 No Limit Hold'em - JC Tran

# Winner of Event 50 - 10,000 Pot Limit Omaha Championship - Marty Smyth

# Winner of Event 51 - $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. He goes by Wade79 at the poker forum and is one of the moderators there. He's always helping out when can, and has been a huge help to me with setting up sites and any banners that a person might need. Chris is a very trustworthy young man in my books by any standards and plays a pretty mean game of poker to boot.

Most of us have hobbies other than playing online poker all the time , or I do anyhow . One of Chris's is painting miniatures. For lack of a better term I call them medieval fantasy characters. I know a lot of folk collect this type thing...even have a couple of my younger brothers that are into the medieval collectables . Heck, we even have a Medieval Times Theatre Show bout an hours drive from here , so I know it's very popular.

Chris has named his latest site MaronMinis.com, and he's providing a professional and quick miniature painting service. He has a gallery full of pictures of these miniatures and a price list as well . I think you'll find that he can answer most of your questions right on his site, if not send him a mail and I'm sure he'll get back to you in no time. There's a sub-forum that's all his at the poker forum as well .

If you run across him at the poker felt beware though...he's no pushover. ;-)

Private Poker Tourneys

Over at the forum we have a couple small private tourneys this week . Regardless of how you got to the final table, you're there, where everybody wants to be in all poker tournaments. It is doubtful that you limped in, but there's a good chance that you may be limping out quickly if you let the situation root itself into your head. Instead, take a deep breath and set your eyes on the prize.

Mentally preparing for the final table of a tournament can be excruciating for the first-timer, no matter if it’s in the largest tournament in the world like the WSOP or in a cheap online tourney. For many seasoned players it may be the least of their expectations. One thing remains consistent in almost every tournament; everyone at the table is going to finish in the money. This should trigger a strategical move by the best players as they know that chip count and value become less important now than player elimination. Every time a player is eliminated, the remaining players make a bit more, thus it becomes so much more important to concentrate on the elimination of a player than finding yourself hoping to build your stack.

Of course stack size, chip count, position and all such variables are so very important when considering play at a final table, but focusing on the basics, a player's concern should lie in staying at the table for as long as possible! For anyone who's seen a final table in a televised event, someone will be going all-in early. It would be an uncommon occurrence not to see such a thing happen, and when this does, let someone call the action; it may be you if you've got something amazing to play. All too often players bringing large stacks to the final table targeting the smallest stack and trying to push them out quickly without having the goods to do so. The last thing you want to see at a final table is that the playing field once again becomes even.

Taking the elimination factor into consideration, you'll want to continue to focus on your competitors, just as you have throughout the tournament. In theory the final table should offer you the best play that you've experienced within any particular tournament, so be sure to just relax and observe when you fold out of the action early. One thing's for certain; you don't want to be unaggressive when it comes to attempting to steal blinds, etc., but just know that players that choose to meet your challenge will more than likely be drawing to a strong hand. Tight-aggressive styles seem to dominate the final table, but it goes without saying that whoever the winner eventually is, he or she didn't get there without some luck. Take your shots when luck is on your side, taking what you can and accepting any overly bold challengers. And most importantly, enjoy it, you're exactly where you'd hoped to be.

Gotta hate the Cowboys

Yesterday we had a little private poker tourney at the forum. I needed that, just too much on the mind lately.... always do though around this time of year. Fathers Day and Christmas just brings back a lot of memories, both fond and not so fond of my dad.

I had my dad on a pedestal you see and he died bout 11 years ago of cancer at the age of 54. Dad was a hard man, and growing up we didn't always see eye to eye, but that man loved his family more than some in my family will ever understand. With six of us boys though I can now understand why he had to be so hard . You try to make sure your children grow up to have morals, and in order to do that you have to know what tough love is.

Back when I had got out of the military I thought I was ten foot tall and bullet proof. One day I stood up to dad when he got on my case about how I was acting as a father...well I done something a son should never do to a parent, and I hit him. Dad was a right fair sized man, six foot two and weighed in about 235lbs. Would have been a hell-a-va heavy weight boxer if you ask me, and he just put a good old fashioned ass whooping on this old boy . lol

It's was two years before I'd ever speak to him again after that. Mom would come around and try to get me to just go visit him, but I'd refuse to do so. She always told me that being the oldest I was too much like the man. After my second child Denora was born I finally gave in and went over to let him see his first grand daughter. A stranger would have never thought that we'd had a falling out...things were as good as they had ever been, if not better. I'm very thankful that we got the chance to mend things. Dad were'nt around but for bout ten years after that, and I'm damn glad we got to spend that time together. We never did play each other poker, he were'nt much for cards, but we done our share of camping and fishing together. I'll cherish those days for as long as I'm here on this earth.

History repeats it's self they say , and I do believe that. My son and I are going through pretty much the same damn thing right now....the wife says we're just too much alike. It's been several months now since I've talked to him . Not to long after my surgery to remove the cancer and polyps from my vocal cords we got into an argument and I'd told him to never call this house again till he could show me more respect. I've heard he's out of the Army now and moving out west somewhere. I sure hope that boy calls today and we can mend this thing..........

Anyhow, Happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there. If you got a father that's still around this old world, be sure to call him up. You just never know when that opportunity may be gone.

Poker Tournament Tips

There are quite a few poker players who enter tournaments without doing their research. And going into a poker tourney without knowing any strategy can be a recipe for disaster.

One of the best online poker tips is to avoid the crazy players in the beginning. At every tourney, there are going to be many players who have no sense of what it means to properly manager money at the table and they’ll be risking all of their chips with out-of-control maneuvers that they should never try.

Since these people have no knowledge of tournaments, they usually stay in most hands that they have no business being in and catch cheap cards on the turn and river. That’s why one of the best things a person can do is to play tight at the beginning and let all of these players bust out.

Once a person makes it to the middle stage of the tourney, they can open up their play a little more as most of the bad players are gone. Normal play here should benefit any player as most people know what they’re doing at this point. On a side note, if you are looking to play at an online casino you should be very carefull as to how much you gamble.

If you are lucky enough to make it all the way to the end of a tournament, you will notice that people start playing really tight right before the last table is decided. This is because everyone wants to let the other people lose their chip stacks so they can make the final table. If one plays a little loose here, they can steal some blinds and chips from these tight players.
